iOS fragmentation is less severe than Android but still meaningful. Apple controls both hardware and software, which dramatically reduces variation, but there are still important differences to account for.

Safe Area Insets: A Critical Concept

Modern iPhones have irregular screen shapes due to the notch (iPhone X through 14) and Dynamic Island (iPhone 14 Pro and later). The "safe area" is the portion of the screen that is guaranteed to be fully visible and not obscured by hardware elements.

If your app's content extends into the unsafe area without proper handling:

  • Text may be hidden behind the Dynamic Island
  • Buttons near the bottom may be obscured by the home indicator bar
  • Content near the top may be clipped by the notch

For web apps, this means using CSS env(safe-area-inset-top), env(safe-area-inset-bottom), etc. For native apps, this means respecting the safeAreaLayoutGuide in UIKit or .safeAreaInset in SwiftUI.

iOS Version Adoption

Apple pushes updates aggressively through persistent update notifications, automatic updates, and the tight integration between hardware and software:

  • ~75% of iPhones run the latest major version within 3 months of release
  • ~15% run the previous major version
  • ~10% run two or more versions behind (older devices that cannot update, or users who actively avoid updates)

The practical implication: You must support at least iOS N and iOS N-1. If your user base includes enterprise or educational institutions, support N-2 because IT departments often delay updates for compatibility testing.

iPhone SE: The Small Screen You Cannot Ignore

The iPhone SE (3rd generation) has a 4.7-inch screen with a 750x1334 resolution. It is the smallest iPhone currently sold and represents a significant portion of the user base in several demographics:

  • Enterprise: Companies buy iPhone SEs in bulk because they are the most affordable iPhone
  • Older users: Many users prefer the smaller, lighter form factor and the physical home button
  • Developing markets: The iPhone SE is often the entry-level iPhone

If your layout is designed for 6.1-inch screens, it may break badly on the SE. Text may be too small, buttons may be too close together, and content may require excessive scrolling. Always test on the iPhone SE as an edge case.

iPad and Multitasking

iPads add another layer of complexity:

  • Split View: Two apps side by side, each getting half or a third of the screen. Your app may render at widths you never designed for.
  • Slide Over: A narrow overlay window (~320pt wide). Your app must handle very narrow widths.
  • Stage Manager: On newer iPads, apps can be resized to arbitrary dimensions, similar to desktop windows.

If your analytics show any iPad usage, you need to account for these multitasking modes. A layout that works fine in full-screen may break completely at one-third width in Split View.
